My boyfriend works 12 hours a day which is basically half of the whole day, and with only one day off.

That only means he loses the chance for leisure or vacation and it’s sad to think that most of the time he misses special family events.

Showing affection or PDA (Public Display of Affection)- Holding hands, hugging or cuddling is not that allowed in the public eye. But unfortunately in Japan if you are in a public place or at least there’s a presence of someone else, flashing your affection is a big no no!

Way back when we were still in the Philippines I would usually hold his hand or cling around his arm but one day when we were already in Japan I accidentally reached his hand to hold and all of a sudden he got annoyed and reminded me that it is not nice to do it in public in Japan. There’s nothing wrong about working hard but everything is only good in moderation.

After publishing the article “The Truth About Dating In Japan As A Foreigner” a lot of female readers asked me what it’s like to date a Japanese guy.

Many seemed to be interested in cultural differences and resulting problems in the relationship between a foreign woman and a Japanese man.

However, regardless of that, me and my Japanese boyfriend have been together for a long time now, so, I will share some of the things that I discovered with my personal experience in dating a Japanese.

I’ve heard from many people that they were just “used” as an opportunity to get free English lessons (or whatever their native language was). And at the same time there’s only a very tiny number of foreign (read: non-Asian) women with Japanese men next to them. Maybe that’s a secret we’ll never quite get, but there are many theories!A lot of Japanese women want a guy that tells them several times a day how much he loves them.It was an interesting journey and I want to thank all of the participants for taking the time to tell us about their own unique story.“I moved to Japan when I was 18 and have been dating Asian guys ever since. I often hear girls who long for Asian boyfriends say that Western guys are dogs, and I can confidently say that Asian men are no different. There are times that he needs to spend some extra hours if the boss is still around the office, which, according to him, is a part of paying respect to his higher-up.One thing that challenges my patience the most is the drinking habit.Although I’ve been in Japan for 6 years now, I totally lack that kind of experience.Instead I asked friends and fellow bloggers, who have had Japanese boyfriends or are even married to a Japanese man, to share their personal experience with us.Andre’s case was misfortunate because he had a particularly direct communication style and his ex-girlfriend had a particularly indirect communication style. When Charles, a British guy, met her, he immediately liked her. A few days later, Charles sent her a message: ‘Hey, let’s go out again sometime.’ To this, she politely replied, ‘No thanks.’ Her lack of interest wasn’t the only problem. Some of these restaurants are managed by Japanese-Indian couples.James is a British man who is said to have slept with more than 100 Japanese women. She was a rock musician but she dressed very nicely. Charles didn’t speak much Japanese, and she didn’t speak any English at all. (I know this because the Japanese wives tend to be very friendly and often talk to me.) Danuja, a Sri Lankan man who has lived in Japan for 11 years, had two long-term relationships with Japanese girls prior to his current Japanese girlfriend. They became friends first and it took six months for them to start dating.
